Bill Archer


Congressman Bill Archer, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, represents the 7th District of Texas. He has been a member of Congress since 1971 and of the Joint Committee on Taxation since 1988. From 1988-1994, Archer was the ranking Republican on Ways and Means.

Prior to becoming Chairman, Congressman Archer was active in health care reform, welfare reform, foreign trade and campaign finance policy and legislation. He was also a member of the 1982 National Commission on Social Security Reform.

Bill Archer was a member of the Texas House of Representatives, and Coucilman and Mayor Pro-tem for Hunters Creek Village. He is the former President of Uncle Johnny Mills, Inc., a former Director of Heights State Bank, and served in the United States Air Force.

Congressman Archer attended Rice University and received his BBA and LLB Degrees with Honors from The University of Texas at Austin. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, from groups such as the National Federation of Independent Business, National Alliance of Senior Citizens, National Taxpayers' Union and the National Venture Capital Association.

Bill Archer is married to the former Sharon Sawyer and has five children, two step children and eight grandchildren.
