Introduction to Bionomics
Michael Rothschild
During the Machine Age, it was only logical for economists and commentators to describe the economy as a "great engine" that would "pick up speed" or "lose steam." But with the invention of the microprocessor and onset of the Information Age, there is a need for a more illuminating economic metaphor. Bionomics describes the market economy as a "virtual rainforest," a spontanteously self-organizing ecosystem of magnificent complexity, diversity, competition, cooperation, and evolution. As bionomic thinking reaches a broader audience, it will help people make sense of the staggering transformation now underway in business and political life.
